João Gilberto & Caetano Veloso - O Pato

Well, haven't posted in a long while...but 27club commented on one of the entries and I was like, 'Damn, someone still reads this?!' So I've decided to do a couple more.. Haha I guess I need a little nudging...

Anyways, been learning a bit about history of Brazilian music, specifically the popularization of samba under the rule of Getulio Vargas in the 1930s-40s. He tried to promote nationalism through the use of radio and pop culture. Pretty awesome stuff - music as a political tool...

But I'm more into bossa nova and above is a video of João Gilberto (aka 'Father of Bossa Nova') and Caetano Veloso (an equally well-known musician... whom I know little about). It was a movement that lasted from the 1950s-60s.

Hope all is well.

Glad to see you're still alive!!! I used to love you podcasts & they still come up from time to time when my mp3 player is on 'random' & they're always a treat. I hope you find the time & motivation to do some new ones in the future. Great to see you're still listening to great music.

Cheers,
K.

27club - hahah but i dun think a lot of languages can pull off sounding so cool while singing abt ducks and kitties! i guess i'll write a bit more about vargas later, when i'm done taking notes on the book so i won't spew out wrong info.

I'm doing good, I went to MU for 2 years but I'm spending this year at home while my family transitions into a new job in North Dakota. I'm hoping to go to the University of Kansas next year and continue studying Japanese. Are you still going to WashU?

I want to be Japanese major but I still haven't actually studied abroad there which is what I'm really excited for. I'd love to live with a family to learn more. Cultural Anthropology sounds really interesting though, you must get to study some amazing things. Some day we should definitely go to the St. Louis Zoo or something and listen to some great music together :).
